Challenge 8 Collaborate and Communicate - Would love rubric feedback!

When we have students collaborate in class, they use web 2.0 tools to do it (i.e. wiki, ning, google tools, etc.)  Such an approach, versus traditional in-class group work, allows for a more relevant  21st century experience.  It estblishes the understanding that collaboration can and will occur with anyone at any time.  I have also included a rubric of a final project our students will be working on in a integrated 21st century technologies and world studies course.  We would love your…

Finally finding time to work

After jumping out to a great start in this class, I have found myself falling behind which makes me quite stressed. Today I had time during my prep to get some work done.

Here is my latest entry covering Challenge 11

Challenge #7 - Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship - what an essential topic to be discussing in the early part of the 21st century.   I work hard to create authentic experiences for my students so thay they may practice digital citizenship and understand the importance of it. My students participate in Digiteen and I am currently working on developing a global project.   What I am finding is that my students are very use to social networking with friends, however, they do not have experiences with social networking at a… Continue

CHALLENGE #9 AND BONUS

For Challenge #9, I used the Wiki Grading Rubric to assess three students that participated in the Net Gen Ed project that I conducted research on. To accomplish this, I first reviewed the wiki history and discussion tabs to determine if the students contributed proportionately. Just like the rubric states, if a minimal number of contributions are made by the students, I adjusted the grade accordingly. Also, I used the following three criteria descriptions to assess the students: (A) Finding…

My new daugher Ava Lynn

Just wanted to share pictures of my new daughter Ava Lynn. She was born last Monday. She is awesome. She is our third child and we are having fun watching her grow.

On my blog www.coffeeforthebrain.blogspot.com I have a video and images to my new daughter Ava Lynn. You might have to scroll down to the posts from last week. There are two posts. One is a video and another one is a link to a photography company who came in and took… Continue

#9 Bonus! Join as a Peer Review Classroom

I don't have a class that can join a wiki for Peer Review right now so I arranged a conversation with Melissa Noack, a high school Art teacher who has been collaborating with other Art teachers in various formats for the last few years. Melissa has been a pioneer in uses of technology for many years, challenging herself and her students to expand the possibilities for feedback and reflection on their art learning. While she has used wikis for classroom content management Melissa set up a ning… Continue

Challenge #8: Collaborate and Communicate

One of the exciting things about working with collaboration and online is when one of those magical opportunities comes out of a simple email.  That has just happened in the past two weeks.

While this not a project that has been done on a wiki but in Edmodo it certainly provides an opportunity for collaboration and communication.  I was also able to be part of the the pilot project for the elementary Flat Classroom Project -  A Week in the Life...... and saw how a wiki works with teacher… Continue

Challenge #7: Empower Digital Citizenship Action

At Yarmouth High School we have a set of core values that are the basis for our community of learners. We designed a Digital Citizenship day to focus on six of those core values as they relate to the online lives of our students. In collaboration with the high school integrator and librarian this is our third year that we have spent a day with all of the 9th graders on this…

Challenge #13

I am in the process of creating a small global collaborative project with a colleague of mine. Currently we have created the wiki, cmp, ning, and google group. On the wiki we set up the questions the students would like answered. The students want to know different information about other cultures.  They submitted questions that we then put on the wiki.  Once the students collaborate through the wiki and possibly skype and get answers to their questions, then they will have a project (they…

Challenge #9

This was a challenge for me.  There were parts of the rubric I had problems assessing.  This in part because this was completed before I had my CMP set up.  Furthermore, I need to continue learning about wikis and tags. Overall, our comparisons were about the same when we compared our evaluations of the wikis.  We were actually evaluating different parts of the projects.  It is much easier to see content, one can see who contributed through the history.  Is there another…

Challenge #8

We have been using wikis in my classes for a variety of projects.  One of the projects required the students to create a thesis for a paper for their group.  They were not allowed to talk about the project.  They only could communicate through the wiki.  They were not very comfortable with this, but they did it.  Traditionally, the students would have worked on their own or in pairs.  Students might have worked together on a thesis statement, but they all would not have contributed and edited… Continue

Cart Before the Horse

I am currently involved in a project with Vicki and Julie called a Week in the Life.  It is a project that pairs up different students looking at a variety of interesting things that are different in different parts of the world.  For example: School Time, Leisure time, Languages and Clothing etc. . .…

CHALLENGE #8

For Challenge #8, I participated in the Net Gen Ed project wiki. When comparing and contrasting a collaborative wiki editing project with a traditional in-class group work project, the difference is the students in the collaborative working environment are more independent. When they make corrections and/or revisions, they are in a different location in most cases. A traditonal in-class environment allows the students to be in the same location and converse with each other. Therefore, to…

Challenge #6 - Classroom Monitoring Portal

I finally created a CMP for my district TPACK wiki of teacher projects.

TPACK wiki CMP

I look forward to sharing the use of CMP with my teachers that use wikis, Diigo etc with their students while developing projects.   I believe the use of a CMP will make it easier for the teacher to organize and follow the students work. Until this tool, I had numerous emails filling up my mailbox!   Thank…

Challenge #10 Choice

My district has a technology initiative that is providing each teacher with a laptop and each classroom with a presentation station including a projector and a document camera (ELmo).  As part of the initiative, the teachers receive 2 - 3 days of professional development with their teacher based teams.  We completed the Middle School teachers' training in the Fall and we are currently training the High School teachers.  We refer to the training as…

Teacher Meeting for Flat Classroom Project and a question or two.

Just looking ahead for once and realized that we are supposed to be joining a teacher meeting on one of the upcoming Flat Classroom projects.

Is there a list of dates for these teacher meetings? I may have overlooked the obvious, but I did not see this until now. Sorry, a huge Showcase Night last week for my program and a baby tomorrow has caused my life to spin around and around and around.

Are we expected to join one of these projects? I am just trying to…

Challenge #8 - Collaborate & Communicate

Vicki helped me to set up a wiki within the FlatClassroom private wiki to share ideas aboutElementary wikis and collaboration. We are struggling to add science back into our curriculum so I started a page about science units. Several others have joined the wiki, but as of today no one has added a page. Vicki added ideas to the Discussion about ways to include students in the wiki.
